This one comes to us from Salt Lake City, where construction on a new rail system several years ago caused headaches to businesses and motorists for months. In response, the city tried to assuage the annoyance with promotions, including giving away coupons to car washes for drivers sick of getting dust on their vehicles.

This week the Bangor Daily News suggested doing the same thing in Bangor, Maine, where construction in the downtown area has been hurting commerce since early spring.

When Salt Lake City, Utah, extended light rail train service about a decade ago, it set aside funds to help market affected businesses during construction. Those promotions included coupons and advertising for special promotions at affected businesses. The businesses gave out car wash coupons to customers who parked their cars in areas dirtied by construction dust.

The coupons don’t have to come from the city itself as an “Official Promotion.” They can come from any car wash looking to build loyalty or lure new clients. Construction is a fact of life for a lot of people. (You know you’re in Ohio [or insert your state] when you see orange barrels.) Car wash businesses can take advantage of that by slipping coupons under the windshields of cars parked in construction zones.
