A car wash business in Whittier, California, had the actually pretty brilliant idea to serve beer and wine at its Los Angeles County business. Unfortunately the local planning commission wasn’t on board with the concept. Officials there turned down the idea proposed by Whittier Car Wash and Cafe.

Commissioners said they worried people would swing in for a quick wash, chug a beer and then head out on the road again. They said the nearby school children could be at risk, and pointed out several local businesses and restaurants already served alcohol. The car wash’s owner said turning the idea down for that reason wasn’t right.

“It’s not fair,” he told the Whittier Daily News. “There are other (nearby) places where you can get beer and wine,” referring to Olive Garden and Chili’s.

Commissioners did say they liked the owner’s idea to install a restaurant and barbershop at the car wash, though the article did not say whether those plans would go through.
