Car maker Nissan has introduced a new dirt-repelling paint that, if widely manufactured, would change the game for car wash businesses, according to the company.

Already, they’ve made it available in the UK with their new car, the Note, which starts at around $20,300.

“The Nissan Note is first car to trial paint which could make car washes obsolete,” Nissan said in announcing the car. “Washing a car can be a chore — and a costly one at that. In response, Nissan has begun tests on innovative paint technology that repels mud, rain and everyday dirt, meaning drivers may never have to clean their car again.”

The nano-paint technology is called Ultra-Ever Dry, and they call it “the world’s first self-cleaning car.” The product comes from UltraTech International Inc., a company based in Jacksonville, Fla., that makes products for oil spill containment. It seems they’ve applied the same principles that negate oils to a spray-on product for vehicles.

“The Nissan Note has been carefully engineered to take the stress out of customer driving, and Nissan’s engineers are constantly thinking of new ways to make families’ lives easier,” said Geraldine Ingham, chief marketing manager for Nissan Note, in the company’s statement. “We are committed to addressing everyday problems our customers face and will always consider testing exciting, cutting edge technology like this incredible coating application.”

The Daily Mail asks “death of the car wash?” We’re not so sure. If every car were built with this technology, it could severely reduce sales. But that’s a big “if.” Moreover, the effectiveness of the product is only apparent from marketing materials; how well it works in real life remains to be seen. We’ve reached out to the International Carwash Association to see if they have any thoughts about the “self-cleaning car.” We’ll post when we hear back.
